What Skills Do You Need To Be A Beautician?

If you want to become a successful and professional beauty therapist in the UK, there is a range of skills that you need to master. People who take up courses like NVQ Beauty Therapy get so much attracted to the glamorous side of the job that they forget that there are some personal qualities that they might need. This goes without saying that confidence in meeting new people is the key to success as a beautician. If you are not comfortable meeting strangers and getting them to talk about their insecurities regarding their looks, then you might not become a good beauty therapist. The beauty industry is something that works on ‘word of  mouth.’ If people are not talking about how good of a beautician you are, then you may not get more clients or it can also become difficult to retain the existing ones.

The following are some important skills that you need to develop personally to become a professional beauty therapist.

  • A beautician is a professional that people put their confidence in and faith in. They might reveal some uncomfortable things about themselves that are embarrassing to them. Whether it is anybody’s issue or any other thing, it is up to you to maintain that trust and not disclose it to anybody else.
  • Being a beauty therapist doesn’t just mean doing what the client asks you to do. It is your opportunity to show your artistic flair and advise people on what works best for them.
  • Last but not least, it is a vast industry that is constantly evolving. You have to keep up with the latest trends while not letting go of the basics.

If you have that learning attitude and have the passion to help people look their best, then nothing will stop you from becoming a successful beautician.

Eyebrows are a crucial part of anyone’s face. That is why people have been shaping and taming them for years, as it instantly makes their faces look radiant. However, methods of restructuring eyebrows have changed now. In the current scenario, you can find various techniques that require minimal pain and effort, while making brows look flawless. One such procedure is eyebrow extensions.

Eyebrow Extensions:

Some people suffer from the problem of thin and sparse eyebrows. This can either be a result of genetics or over-plucking for years. But whatever may be the case, thin eyebrows are no more in trend. So when people wish to get those thick and bushy brows, they opt for eyebrow extensions.

As the name suggests, the procedure includes adding artificial hair to the eyebrow area to make brows look fuller. The fibers can get attached to both the skin and the brow hair. Moreover, the fibers used here are kept fine to match the natural texture of eyebrows.

Benefits Of Eyebrow Extensions

There are numerous other techniques with which you can get thicker and fuller-looking eyebrows. However, none of those methods provides texture because they are similar to tattoos on the skin. Can You Do People’s Makeup without a License?

If you are operating from your own premises, then some governing bodies will need you to register with them. So yes, you will need a license to do people’s makeup. They do this to ensure that you follow safe practices and that your premise is safe. This won’t be much of a problem because if you are conducting a salon business professionally, your salon will be safe anyway. For this, you will need to provide specific documentation, like the certificate of registration. You may have to pay a certain fee to cover the inspection of the local council.

But, you should know that if you work as a freelancer in the United Kingdom, there aren’t any countrywide licensing requirements.

You can determine whether you can do people’s makeup without a license by speaking to your local council. The council may ask you to present public liability insurance before they can grant you a license. Again, if you are running the premise professionally, you may already have all the paperwork required that states you are doing business legally. Also, depending on your activities, you may need other licenses as well.

Why do you need a license?

A license ensures that you have been recognized by the council as a safe practitioner. Your practices won’t do any harm to the general public who comes to you for makeup services. Also, it covers any kind of treatment risks involved. So, before you start working as a professional, get approval from the council.

What Is Brow Lamination?

With the mention of lamination, almost everyone thinks about the coating that we do around all important documents. But attaching the same term with eyebrows makes it entirely confusing. If you have never heard about brow lamination, it is time you must learn about the technique. This way, you can decide whether it is the solution to your brow problems or not.

Understanding Brow Lamination

Brow lamination is a process to get your desired eyebrow shape without much hassle. It includes lifting, shaping, and fixing of brow hair to avoid issues, such as:

  • Unruly eyebrow hair
  • Gaps in eyebrow hair
  • Thinning of eyebrow hair
  • Overplucking

The benefit of brow laminate is that it is a straightforward and quick process. You can get your desired results within the matter of an hour. Moreover, it is a non-invasive procedure. Thus, you need not go through unnecessary pain to get the eyebrows of your dreams.

The Final Results

The final results of brow lamination look like you have put on some brow gel to shape them. However, these effects are temporary. They fade off within some time, and you will have to go back to the salon so that experts can re-perform the same procedure.

While this may seem extensive, there is nothing to worry about. As the process is non-invasive, you can easily go for it every once in a while. Plus, there won’t be any hassle of shaping your eyebrows on an everyday basis. All these results make the process worth every penny.

All In All,

Can You Be a Self-taught Makeup Artist?

When we talk about self-taught makeup artists, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? For many, self-taught means they have learned the art from the internet by following makeup tutorials and influencers on social media. Those who have learnt from watching makeup tutorials and videos are often considered as copycats until or unless they understand the basics of makeup. Merely doing what others are doing isn’t learning. You have to get your basics clear about being a makeup artist.

Yes, you can be a self-taught makeup artist, but there’s a catch. Makeup is an art that consists of hundreds and thousands of techniques. Professional and experienced makeup artists know how to use and combine these techniques to highlight the unique features of their clients. Now, following the step-by-step process of the tutorial and decently implementing it doesn’t make you a makeup artist. A true makeup artist never copies others’ work. Yes, you can look up to them for inspiration.

So, if you want to be a self-taught makeup artist, the first thing you should do is get the basics cleared. Learn how to use different makeup tools and kits, how to apply various cosmetics, and how to choose the right cosmetic product for a particular individual.

You should read books and try to improve your techniques with the help of established masters. Only look up to online video tutorials for reference. A self-taught makeup artist is someone who asks a lot of questions and tries out different ways of applying makeup.

CPBA offers free employment advice and guidance to their beauty therapy learners. We also offer free make up courses and funded level 3 make up courses with work placements.

What Is the Difference Between a Beautician and a Beauty Therapist?

If you are interested in joining a beauty course, you may be wondering, “what is the difference between a beautician and a beauty therapist?” Aren’t they the same thing? Because within the United Kingdom, both terms are used interchangeably. While they are the same, whether you will be called a beautician or a beauty therapist will depend on the qualifications and certifications you possess. Yes, it may surprise you that a beauty therapist and a beautician are different.

Here is what you need to know.

Who is a Beautician?

A beautician solely focuses on skincare and hair care treatments. For example, if you are just starting out and opt for NVQ Level 2 Beauty course, you will be trained in the following areas:

  • Skincare facials
  • Nail treatments – gels, pedicures, manicures
  • Spray tanning
  • Waxing
  • Hair treatment – hair cutting, colouring, styling, and other basics
  • Make up, such as bridal makeup, or any event-specific makeup

If you are skilled in these treatments, then you are a beautician.

Who is a Beauty Therapist?

To become a beauty therapist from a beautician, you will need to build on the knowledge and skills you gained as a beautician. This is one level up and you will be performing treatments using advanced technology and tools. For example, if you have completed your Level 2 Beauty Diploma course and take up Level 3, you will be trained in the following areas:

  • Various types of body massages, including stone therapy, Indian head massage, and Swedish massage
  • Intimate waxing treatments, like Brazillian waxing
  • Hair removal procedures like electrolysis
  • Facial electrical treatments
  • Body electrical treatments

So basically, the primary difference lies in professional expertise.

Can You Learn Hairdressing At Home?

When you get your hair cut, coloured or style, there are a few things you want from a hairdresser, aren’t there? You want a hairdresser who has training, who has experience, who has a good haircut themselves so you know what to expect!

What is the difference between learning at home and learning at college?

There are online courses in hairdressing, but they won’t give you the training you need to become a fully adept hairdresser. At home, do you have all the equipment you need? Is there a trained professional guiding you? Are there lots of people volunteering to let you cut their precious hair?

An online course from home will teach you about the health and safety of a salon and about the industry itself, but you need more than that. In the current COVID-19 situation, however, gaining practical skills in a salon is hard to achieve. You need to be a bit more creative when it comes to developing your skills as a hairdresser. You need to make sure you comply with all the rules and regulations before you start practising on models at home. You need to make sure there’s always a professional (hairdressing tutor) guiding you when you carry out the treatment.

To be a hairdresser you need practical skills and experience.

The best way of developing excellent customer service skills is through meeting the general public. To wash a client’s hair and ensure they’re comfortable, you need salon chairs. The only way to learn how to perfectly layer shoulder-length hair is practise and guidance.

Hairdressing is a practical skill that takes human interaction and although you might be able to learn the theory of hairdressing at home, the only way to become a skilled hairdresser is through working in a salon environment.

CPBA offers free employment advice and guidance to their women’s hairdressing learners. We also offer free women’s hairdressing courses and work placements.
